Head into summer with 4 of the season’s wildest music festivals

As people get ready to kick off the 2019 festival season, let’s dive back into the Reuters Connect archives to take a look at some of the quirky festivals this summer.
Summer is nearly here – and that can only mean one thing: Festival season is upon us! If you can’t get enough of hot beats, impressive guitar solos and unforgettable summer nights, make sure to explore the following four festivals with Reuters Connect:
Rock am Ring / Rock im Park
At 33 years old, Germany’s biggest rock music festival, Rock am Ring, is also one of the longest-standing festivals across the globe. With its innovative line-up approach – the festival shares a nearly identical line-up with its younger sister Rock im Park – the festival has established an unparalleled reputation in the rock music scene. Rock im Park is held at the now iconic Nürburgring race track, while its 22-year old sister festival takes place at the Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg.
Alice in Chains, Die Ärzte, Dropkick Murphys, Slipknot and Slayer are among the rock bands to perform this summer.

Glastonbury
One thing is for certain: Glastonbury stands out from the crowd. While its famous Pyramid Stage may play host to some of the biggest names in music, it is the other side of the festival that proves to be the real scene-stealer.
From the shenanigans of its legendary Shangri-la – Glastonbury’s night time district – to the spider-like, flame-throwing Arcadia structure, where comedians, drag queens and magicians alike come together, the 900-acre site offers plenty to be explored.
Among this year’s impressive line-up are The Killers, Janet Jackson, Miley Cyrus, Hozier, Lauryn Hill and Wu-Tang Clan.

EXIT
Serbia’s EXIT was hailed as one of Europe’s best music festivals by none other than Forbes magazine. The award-winning music festival, which is held at the Petrovaradin Fortress in the city of Novi Sad, was founded in 2000 as part of a student movement fighting for democracy and peace in its native Serbia and the Balkans. To this day, the multi-genre festival is run by a non-profit organization with a strong social mission. In 2018, EXIT welcomed around 200,000 visitors.
The festival will play host to acts such as The Cure, The Chainsmokers, Skepta and DJ Snake in 2019.

Sziget
Ever wondered what it would be like to live it up on a party island? Your search ends with Sziget. The week-long music festival has been transforming Hungary’s 266-acre Obuda island into a fully functioning festival site since 1993, hosting over 1,000 performances across 60 stages each year. Last year, the festival counted a record-breaking 565,000 visitors. Aside from its music, Sziget stands out for its plethora of additional activities such as contemporary dance, stand-up comedy, an outdoor cinema, various exhibitions and – of course – a beach, should you fancy a dip in the Danube.
This year’s musical acts include Ed Sheeran, Florence + the Machine, Foo Fighters and Post Malone.
