Five iconic People’s Choice Awards moments
From IRL breakups to wardrobe malfunctions, there’s never a dull moment with the People’s Choice Awards.
Perhaps one of America’s favorite awards shows in entertainment, the People’s Choice Awards has represented the people’s vote since 1975. From real life breakups and Twilight fan-girling, to wardrobe malfunctions and Kanye-copying, the live award show never fails to surprise us.
Let’s take a look at five of the most iconic People’s Choice Awards moments:
Ellen DeGeneres makes history with 20th win
In 2017, beloved talk show host Ellen DeGeneres scooped up not one, not two, but three People’s Choice Awards’ gongs, winning in three separate categories and breaking PCA history by becoming the show’s winner with the most trophies: 20.
DeGeneres took home ‘Favorite Animated Movie Voice’ (for “Finding Dory”), ‘Favorite Daytime TV Host’ (for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”) and ‘Favorite Comedic Collaboration’ (for “Mall Mischief” with Britney Spears).
Following an introduction by singer Justin Timberlake, the comedienne commented: “Seventeen, I get it. Eighteen, sure. Nineteen, I can see that. But 20 is outrageous. This is really something that means more to me… because it comes from the people.”
Victoria Beckham empowers women in inspirational speech
Last year, singer and fashion designer Victoria Beckham bagged the much-deserved ‘Fashion Icon’ trophy at the star-studded event held in Santa Monica, California.
As she took the stage, Beckham sent chills throughout the venue in her much-praised acceptance speech. “Ten years ago, I embarked on the most exciting, nerve-wracking and all-consuming vision and to have that recognised here tonight is just incredible,” she recalled.
“I always told myself: dream big and then dream even bigger. I wanted to show if I can do it then really anyone can do it. What you can achieve can really be limitless.”
Jennifer Aniston wins her first PCA
It’s been 18 years since America’s sweetheart Jennifer Aniston received her very first solo PCA award. Following years of award show success for her hit sitcom ‘Friends’, in 2001, the actress had her very own moment to shine when she secured People’s ‘Favorite Female Television Performer’ for her role on ‘Friends’, an award she would go on to win a further three times between 2002 and 2004.
Taking the stage in a long, black carpet ensemble and a blunt bob, the actress funnily remarked: “I don’t have any of these!”, before thanking her co-stars, the sitcom’s creative director and husband Brad Pitt for inspiring her in her work.
Aniston has also been announced as the recipient of the honorary People’s Choice Icon Award 2019.
Sandra Bullock gives hilarious acceptance speech
Speaking of America’s sweethearts, who could forget Sandra Bullock’s 2006 win for ‘Favorite Motion Picture Actress’?
The ever-hilarious actress won in the category for her performance in both Crash and Miss Congeniality 2. Bullock started her speech by saying: “I have to be honest, I’m very shocked. I’m sure there’s a couple of people in America going: What? Her?”
She then went on to praise fellow nominees Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman, famously stating: “I think you picked the wrong person, but I’ll take it.”
Today, the actress is one of the most decorated PCA winners with a total of 11 trophies and 18 nominations.
Olivia Munn pulls a Kanye on Taylor Swift
Who could forget Taylor Swift’s infamous 2009 MTV VMAs incident with Kanye West. It’s forever embedded into VMAs history.
Not Olivia Munn. In 2013, the ‘X-Men” alumni drew inspiration from this very scandal when – very reluctantly – presenting the singer with her award for ‘Favorite Country Singer’.
“This always happens to me…God!”, Swift, dressed in a white gown, quipped when she eventually got hold of the trophy.
